Im going to make a layout, and i was wondering the picture size for layout background. I always guesstimate but I was wondering if there was a specific one.

It will always be expanded or contracted to fill the space where it is being displayed. Larger is probably better. If it is just a pattern then tile it.

There's no single answer to this because it depends what resolution someone's monitor is set to. Like if you use a single 800*600 image and your screen resolution is set to that (or smaller) then it'll cover the whole background when *you* view the page. But if I come along with my screen resolution set higher (mine's currently 1280*1024) then it won't.
